Web content writing is a skill that you can learn. You don't have to be a John Grisham or a Stephen King unless, of course, you're aiming for the New York Times Best-Seller list.

If you're just getting started, you have an advantage. Enough time has passed and research been done to determine exactly how people read content on the Internet. Following are a few tips to help you become a better web content writer.

Keep Content Informative

People who visit your web site are looking for useful information. Your goal should be to help your visitors in some way. Give them solutions to their problems, step-by-step guides on how to accomplish a task, tips on how to save time or money or both, etc.

Make Your Content Scannable

Do you read content on the Internet like you do a good book? Didn't think so. The tendency is to scan; to pick up bits and pieces. So, what techniques can you use to make your web site more scannable?

  • Use Headlines. Short phrases in bold text help to break up the content into "bite-size" pieces. It also makes it easy for someone to understand the main points if their in a rush.
  • Get to the Point. Make your point at the beginning of each paragraph. The remaining text should serve to explain and support the main point.
  • Be Brief. Sentences should not be longer than 20 words and each paragraphs should be limited to no more than four or five sentences.
  • Give 'Em Bullets. A bulleted list attracts attention. Use this to emphasize the benefits your readers will get by purchasing your product or contracting your sevice.
  • Shine on the Light. Place important text, especially benefits, in the spotlight. You can do this various ways. You can bold, background color, hyperlink or a combination of these are ways to make content stand out. Don't overdo it, though.

Write Action-Packed Content

Use action verbs and descriptive adjectives.
